I never really noticed fungi much until I read the book Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. That book gave me the idea to write an article for Science News for Students. My new article explores the amazing world of forest fungi. They explore. The form vast networks. They exchange messages and nutrients with plants. And they help fight climate change.
Serendipity struck when I found out that one of my sources, E. Toby Kiers, was involved in launching a new non-profit that aims to better understand and protect underground fungal networks, SPUN (the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks). The launch coincided perfectly with the publication of my story.
