Writing inside glass to leave messages for aliens

Writing inside glass to leave messages for aliens

The Project Silica team at Microsoft Research is developing a new way to store data inside glass platters. High school students are using it to record a message to be sent into space. The drawings on one platter explain how to read the message, which will be stored on another platter.

Read my story about Project Silica and the high school students’ project on Science News Explores.

What should a message from all of humanity contain? The students working on the project want your input! You can send in pictures or other suggested content to the Golden Record 2.0 website.

Quote

“I like to think of [the message] as a time capsule of humanity. It is about showing who we are to ourselves. Like taking a step back to realize where we are, how far we’ve come, which direction we should go.” – Dexter Greene, student, in a podcast about the collaboration with Microsoft

“Project Silica is a new approach to storing data.” — Richard Black, Microsoft Research
