I first wrote about the potential climate impact of AI back in 2021, before ChatGPT, Sora, Gemini, and all the generative AI hype. Back then, I wasn’t convinced it was going to be such a huge problem. At the time, cryptocurrency had a much larger impact, and the entire field of tech seemed to be such a tiny blip in the world’s energy use. While tech still makes up a relatively small slice of world energy use, it’s clear now that that slice is growing.

Here’s my 2024 take on the problem, with lots of ideas for how to improve the situation:

To ‘green’ AI, scientists are making it less resource-hungry

Curbing AI’s use of energy and water could seriously lessen its threat to our climate

Science News Explores, February 8, 2024

And here is my first story about it:

How does our consumer-focused economy impact climate change? And how does life cycle analysis help us understand these impacts? My editor at Science News Explores challenged me to answer these questions in a story for kids. This wasn’t easy.

Honestly, at first, I really didn’t want to write the story. The issues involved are so complex and far-reaching that it seemed too tough to tackle.

I read two books that helped me focus my thoughts. The first was: Fixation: How to Have Stuff Without Breaking the Planet by Sandra Goldmark. The second: The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Berners-Lee. I highly recommend both of them.

Here’s my story about bending the harmful arrow of take-make-use-toss into a circle of reduce-reuse-repair-recycle-remake.

Creating less new stuff could greatly help Earth’s climate

Here’s why scientists recommend moving to a cycle of reduce, reuse, repair and remake

Science News Explores, March 16, 2023
