Are coyotes moving into your neighborhood?
Science News for Students, September 3, 2020
I started working on this article way back in December 2019. I learned many new things. Here is how you can get along with coyote neighbors:
- Coyotes like to eat pet food, and garbage. So don’t leave these things out in the open.
- Coyotes also love fruit and berries. So if you grow these, coyotes may come calling.
- Don’t let pet cats or small dogs roam freely outdoors if you have coyotes nearby.
- If you see a coyote, don’t feed it! Yell and wave your arms to make it go away.
Here are some more interesting facts:
- Coyotes are smart enough to figure out how to cross streets at stop lights or hunt around bird feeders.
- Coyotes spread throughout all of North America after people nearly wiped out wolves.
- There are coyotes living in New York City.
- Citizen scientists have helped collect and study coyote scat (aka poop).
