I first wrote about the potential climate impact of AI back in 2021, before ChatGPT, Sora, Gemini, and all the generative AI hype. Back then, I wasn’t convinced it was going to be such a huge problem. At the time, cryptocurrency had a much larger impact, and the entire field of tech seemed to be such a tiny blip in the world’s energy use. While tech still makes up a relatively small slice of world energy use, it’s clear now that that slice is growing.
Here’s my 2024 take on the problem, with lots of ideas for how to improve the situation:
