A Field Guide to the Night Sky

A Field Guide to the Night Sky

When I was a kid, my Mom had a telescope. She’d take us in the backyard at night to look at stars and planets. She taught us the names of many constellations. On camping trips, nights were dark enough to see the Milky Way or meteor showers.

This new book reveals 100 different things kids can see in the night sky. Most can be seen without a telescope. I describe what each one is and how to spot it. I also share interesting facts and stories about many of these sights.

The Night Sky

Field Guides for Kids, Abdo Reference, January 2022

My favorite part of writing this book was learning about native astronomy and mythologies related to the stars from all over the world.

No matter where you are on Earth, or what time period you’re living in, all human beings look up and wonder about the night sky. Even though every culture experiences different weather, different seasons, different plants and animals, and has access to different resources, we all see (almost) the same stars and planets.
